“Smoke ’em if You Got ’em”, Watercolor, Graphite, Silver-gilding,(2013-current project)
Walking in public spaces we often encounter many fragments of consumer trash. When walking to work I’m always scanning the ground for discarded empty packs of cigarettes. These objects get crushed by cars or human traffic. Rained and snowed on and kicked around for months. I see this process as a collaboration with the inhabitants of the city. Unknowingly they are preparing the cigarettes for me to draw from.
I consider this artwork a way of taking the nasty habits of smoking cigarettes and the act of littering, and re-contextualizing this trash for a positive purpose.
This series of drawings and watercolors I’ve been working on for the past two years is on display at Salem State University from Oct 4 until Oct 27th 2015.
